Legal Perspectives on Dealing with Art and Objects of Cultural Heritage: Agency Relationships in Art Worlds

Seminar Description:

Professor DeMott will explore the complex and sometimes ambiguous role of the intermediary in art dealings. Biographies and memoirs of artists, collectors and dealers provide many examples of intriguing incidents where the writer was often not aware of the legal ramifications and salience of the relationships between the key players. From her background as an expert on the law of agency, Professor DeMott will explore and contrast relationships of legal agency with other more informal relationships of influence and mediation between artists or owners of cultural objects and the market.

Guest Speaker:

Professor Deborah DeMott, Duke University and McWilliam Visiting Professor of Commercial Law, Sydney Law School

When: Tuesday 1 September 2009, 5.30 - 7.00pm
