Arts Law is delighted to announce that the launch of the workshop component of its Musicians in the Black project will be at the WAMi Music Festival to be held in Perth from 21 - 28 May 2011. The WAMi Festival is an annual festival run by WAM, the West Australian Music Industry Association, which celebrates WA’s thriving contemporary music community.
In 2010, thousands of people attended WAMi Festival gigs, launches, events, conference sessions, exhibitions, and parties. In 2011, in association with Abmusic, Arts Law will be presenting two Musicians in the Black workshops on 26 and 30 May introducing established and emerging Indigenous musicians to some of the legal issues relevant to their creative activities, and helping them to understand their rights. Such issues include music copyright, being in a band, public performances, traditional cultural issues, making recordings and dealing with third parties such as managers, venue operators and recording studios. The workshop on 26 May is open to all WAMi Festival season pass holders. After each workshop, Arts Law lawyers will be available for individual advice sessions with Indigenous musicians.
The Musicians in the Black program is generously funded by the Sidney Myer Fund, APRA and PPCA. Specifically developed and geared toward Indigenous musicians, it is designed around the workshop program and will also include online information sheets and resources including a simple band partnership agreement and a template will for musicians.
