Arts Law submission to ALRC inquiry into Copyright in the Digital Economy

In November, Arts Law provided a submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) inquiry into Copyright in the Digital Economy.  The submission has now been published on the ALRC website for public viewining.

The ALRC Issues Paper raised a number of questions including whether the Copyright Act should provide for an exception ‘permitting private, non-commercial, transformative uses’ of copyrighted material.  Arts Law argued against expanding the exceptions to copyright infringement, with the submission focusing on both the economic impact on artists and the detriment to the moral rights of artists that would result from permitting ‘user generated content’, ‘sampling’, ‘remixes’ and ‘mashups’ of copyrighted material.

ART + Law, December 2012 contains a summary of the submission.

Arts Law's submission is no. 171 and can be found here.
