‘Hearts for Arts Law’ Committee launches

In July 2013, a group of young lawyers came together at the encouragement of the President of the Arts Law Centre of Australia (Arts Law) board, the Hon Margaret Beazley AO, to form a committee that would be involved in fundraising for Arts Law. The idea was that, in today’s competitive fundraising environment, a group of young lawyers could put their heads together and come up with creative ways to raise much needed funds for the organisation.

The committee met a number of times and formed a good rapport. Diving straight in, it was decided that we would launch our first fundraising event in September with a film screening of ‘The Crossing’, an Australian made documentary that won the Audience Award for the Best Documentary at this year’s Sydney Film Festival.

The film screening was a huge success – over 300 tickets were sold and over $12,500 was raised. Andrew O’Keefe was the MC of the night, and did an excellent job keeping the audience laughing and interviewing Enzo Tedeschi (Executive Producer), Julian Harvey (Writer/Producer/Director) and Clark Carter (one of the stars of the documentary) in the Q&A session at the end of the night.

Buoyed by the success of the film screening, Hearts for Arts Law is already busy planning more fundraising events for 2014. In preparation for this we have recently formalised the committee, and the following positions have been appointed:

  • Chairperson:  Allegra Day
  • Vice Chairpersons:  Myles Pulsford and Annabelle Williams
  • Secretaries:  Kathryn Barnes and Heather Huddleston
  • Artistic Director:  Alice McClymont

Other committee members include: Anika Valenti, Jennifer Arnup, May Samali, Kayt Hogan, Hadyn Flack, Katherine Giles and Faraz Maghami.

A special thank you to Anita Jacoby, the Hon Margaret Beazley AO, Andrew Wiseman, Andrew O’Keefe, Enzo Tedeschi, Julian Harvey, Clark Carter and everyone who worked so hard on organising the film screening.

Stay tuned for Hearts for Arts Law in 2014!

Allegra Day is the chairperson of Hearts for Arts Law and a Solicitor at Herbert Smith Freehills.
