2015 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIA) winner, Jukuja Dolly Snell was born at a jila (permanent waterhole) called Kurtal around 1933. Jukuja’s paintings depict Mangarri (bush tucker) and plants, Kurtal jila (living waterhole), jilji (sandhills), Marrajati, Kilan Kilan and surrounding country in the Great Sandy Desert.

Bronwyn Bancroft has been painting for over 30 years and has a diverse artistic practice including public art commissions and imagery design for private commission. Her unique paintings are exhibited nationally and internationally. Bronwyn holds several Board positions and is constantly involved in activism for NSW Aboriginal artists particularly through her voluntary role at Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative.

Dhari is the Meriam (Mer) word for ‘headdress’. Customarily made and worn by males, Dhari were traditionally made from Frigate Bird and Torres Strait Pigeon feathers. Darren’s Dhari is made with goose feathers, cane, red twine and dowel.

Darren Compton is a proud descendant of Bundjalung, Munanjali, Gamillaraay nations of the mainland, and the Mer people of the Torres Strait. He is inspired by Yaputhung Nalung, his mother’s heart beat and the ground beneath his feet.


Funds raised will support Arts Law’s essential work in helping Australian artists; in particular contributing to the Artists in the Black program, a unique legal service providing specialised legal advice and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists especially in regional and remote parts of Australia.
