Feeling Balmy in Balgo

While visiting Balgo on AITB outreach in November we spent some days at the Warlyirti art centre. Balgo is located in the edge of the Tanami Desert south of Kununurra in WA. We were accompanied by Reetika Khanna from Landers who assisted us with valuable pro bono support. Poppy Lever has been art centre manager at Warlyirti for over 5 years and her support and passion ensured we achieved a lot on this very rewarding trip, working in the studio where we gave workshops to encourage artists to know their legal rights, gave legal advice on a wide range of topics and drafted plenty of wills.

We had the opportunity to go to a new small art centre in nearby Mulan, Warruyanta and meet with the women artists there. We took a drive to nearby Lake Parkoo (Gregory), a large lake with lots of bird life including Brolgas and Pelicans, in the middle of the desert. Surrounded by sandy soggy soil and lots of low growing samphire brush. A very exciting and beautiful outreach visit to a unique area of Australia where the temperature reached 41 degrees each day. Thank goodness for air conditioning and no humidity.
