The NSW Government is seeking input into tax reform that supports the creative industries.

Now reaching the half-way point of the Australian Government’s five-year National Cultural Policy, Revive, the NSW Government will hold The Art of Tax Reform Summit in September 2025.

The NSW Government is seeking input from:

  • creators and creative industries workers (individuals and organisations);
  • philanthropists and donors;
  • venue and property stakeholders;
  • tax and economic policy experts; and
  • all levels of government.

Written submissions formally close on Wednesday 20 August 2025.

The NSW Government released a discussion paper on the proposed tax reform – to read the discussion paper you can do so through their webpage: Have Your Say, Cultural Tax Reform

Key proposals the discussion paper raises includes:

  • Exempting prize money, fellowships, and grants from income tax.
  • Changing GST settings.
  • Non-Commercial Loss changes.
  • Introducing simplified artists deductions.
  • Introduce offsets for specific industries such as theatre and live music.
  • Property incentives and vacancy taxes for affordable creative spaces.
  • Further donation incentives.

Arts Law strongly encourages artists, art workers and organisations to have your say. For further information please visit the NSW Government ‘Have Your Say, Cultural Tax Reform’ webpage. We will be participating in a summit on 26 September and welcome your views: [email protected].
