Arts Law in the community
In addition to their visit to Bula’bula Arts Centre in Ramingining, NT, the Arts Law team has been visiting artists, communities and organisations across the country over the past few months, sharing knowledge, listening and supporting. Here are a few highlights from the road.
Bandwidth
We are so grateful to our extraordinarily talented friends at Allens (see above photo), who dedicated proceeds from their recent (very spirited and impressive) Battle of the Bands competition to Arts Law. It was especially lovely to see several members of the IP Team at Allens donning their Arts Law Artists in the Black and Fake Art Harms Culture tee-shirts. Thanks, Allens!
First Languages Australia Conference – Kalgoorlie
In October, Arts Law Principal Solicitor Roxanne Lorenz attended and presented at the 2025 First Languages Australia Conference at the Goldfields Languages Centre in Kalgoorlie, engaging with language workers and advocates from across the country.

Trade marks workshop – Kimberley Land Council
Arts Law delivered a trade marks education session for CEOs and Board Chairs at the Kimberley Land Council, focusing on brand protection and practical governance considerations.
MAP in Katherine, NT
With some drama because of the impending cyclone that was soon to hit Darwin, Arts Law presented a session about ICIP and the law to the Meeting of Arts Professionals in Katherine, NT.

Blue Mountains Writers Festival
Arts Law presented two workshops at the Blue Mountains Writers Festival: Legal Issues 101 for Writers (with pro bono lawyer Chloe Hillary), offering practical tips to help writers avoid legal pitfalls, and Defamation Law for Writers (with pro bono lawyer Anna Spies), which outlined Australian defamation law, recent cases, and how to balance legal risk with freedom of expression.

Planning and culture – Redfern
Sydney-based Principal Adam Flynn presented at Grounded in Redfern, contributing legal perspectives to conversations on planning, place and community.
ICIP Gathering – Blacktown
With Create NSW, Arts Law participated in workshops about Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) session at Leo Kelly Art Gallery in Blacktown, as part of the Western Sydney ICIP Gathering Roadshow.

Supporting South Australian artists
Arts Law presented alongside Creative Australia at Guildhouse presents: Introduction to Creative Workplaces + Arts Law, presented by Guildhouse and Nexus Arts. the event provided South Australian artists with practical guidance on contracts, payment terms and copyright, and responding to strong demand for accessible legal information across the sector.
Copyright and Cultural Heritage in China and Vietnam
Arts Law met with delegations from the arts and cultural heritage sectors from our neighbours in Asia (the copyright office in Vietnam, and the Cultural, Arts, Historical, and Learning Committee of the Hubei Provincial CPPCC in China).

Artistic Freedom Symposium, Melbourne
In October, Arts Law was part of a law and human rights panel at the Artistic Freedom Symposium held in Melbourne.
Upcoming: In Sydney, we are looking forward to participating in another academic research project related to Indigenous Data Sovereignty and ICIP in the GLAM sector with First Nations expert researchers and non-Indigenous scholars, led by Professor Natalie Stoianoff at UTS and Ass. Prof Alexandra George at UNSW.
